Configuration management is a process that assures that a product is properly documented so that the same product can be duplicated over and over again. This is done primarily with drawings and a bill of materials which establish a product baseline. Configuration management is extremely important when a change is made to a product. It controls the product change so that no change can be made without proper documentation; thereby formally notifying everyone that a change has been made. Configuration management can be the responsibility of one individual or an entire department.
