What type of information can be found at the Drafting Zone?
The Drafting Zone is a work-in-progress that will continue to grow in both content and functionality. The objective of the site is to provide users with frequently-needed, hard-to-find information and tools that can be used to improve their knowledge and understanding of drafting standards and practices.
The current version of the Drafting Zone includes an on-line version of Genium's Modern Drafting Practices & Standards Manual. This reference was originally developed by General Electric Company and was used as that organization's internal drafting manual for over 80 years. In 1984, Genium Publishing Corporation assumed responsibility for maintaining the reference and continues to do so today. The Manual is filled with professional, success proven interpretations of the most important standards, routines, and drawing practices in use today. Over 18,000 organizations around the world own a copy of this unique reference.
Every 12 months, Genium distributes two Updates to the Manual. These Updates can be previewed as they are being compiled, at the Drafting Zone.
The Drafting Zone also includes a growing collection of Drafting and Design Tips & Tools. Developed by drafting experts, this diversified assortment of time-saving charts, shortcuts, and pieces of advice are designed to help you perform drafting related tasks and calculations faster and more easily.
Another part of the Drafting Zone is the Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing Study Zone. ASME's Y14.5 is far and away the most technically involved and hardest to understand drawing standard. The Study Zone offers on-line GD&T Practice Exams that test your overall knowledge of ASME Y14.5. Genium's GD&T experts developed a database of over 300 exam questions to serve this portion of the web site. Each time you request an exam, you're presented with an on-line test of 50 multiple choice questions that address the same technical topics covered on the ASME GDTP Certification Exam for the Technologist level. As soon as you complete the exam you receive a comprehensive on-line scoring summary that shows you how well you did on the overall exam and in each of the technical topics covered by the test. The summary also permits you to review the answer choices you selected for each individual question and includes the correct answer plus a complete explanation.
When you become a Drafting Zone Subscriber you'll receive full access to our GD&T Study Guides, a collection of seven on-line references, each addressing a major technical area of GD&T. Each Study Guide includes a review of that topic's key technical concepts plus five study and review questions. If you find yourself scoring poorly on the overall practice exams or within the individual technical topics addressed on the exams, these Study Guides will help you brush up on those topics. If you'd like to get a good idea of what the GD&T Practice Exam experience is like, there is a free 25-question demonstration exam that can be taken by Guest Members and Subscribers.
Ask Gary Whitmire, is the Drafting Zone's moderated question and answer forum which permits users of the site to communicate their drafting related questions, challenges, concerns, and experiences to the Technical Editor of Genium's Manual.
Another premium-content feature of the Drafting Zone is a growing collection of Inspection Guides. Any good inspection process must integrate the drawing and the part to make sure the finished part is exactly what the designer intended it to be. These Guides help make that integration easy to implement.
Configuration/Data Management Advisories are the most recent Subscriber-level feature added to the Drafting Zone. This area of the site will feature valuable advisories designed to help any engineering/drafting organization develop or enhance its system for managing the drawing change process.
How does the Drafting Manual address ASME/ANSI drafting standards?
The Drafting Manual covers all of the important ASME/ANSI engineering drawing standards along with drafting and documentation standards from many other organizations and disciplines by providing topic-by-topic coverage showing accepted drafting practices in accordance with the drafting standards.
